Letting Go of the Clutter

With the popularity of Marie Kondo’s new Netflix series Tidying Up, I thought I would share my thoughts on letting go of clutter. Many of us have a tendency to clutter our lives with unnecessary clutter. We buy stuff we think we will need someday. For some reason of human nature, we feel that we will not be able to find it when or if we need it later.

I have quilting friends that hoard piles and piles of fabric. They have so much fabric that they get overwhelmed and just go out and buy new fabric rather than deal with going through their current collection. I have other friends that cannot let go of anything. Their lives are so full of stuff and they get overwhelmed and live amid rooms full of possessions they don’t need or will ever use. When do possessions become clutter? First, think of all the money you have spent on your clutter. Most people have spent a small fortune on their hoard. Let go of the idea of there not being enough or “I will never find this to buy again”.

In Feng Shui, your home holds the energy of what occurs there. Clutter blocks the energy flowing through your space and your life. Your space reflects your life. If your space is cluttered, then your life is probably just as cluttered. Do you really need all that stuff? Of course, the answer is no.

Are you at a time in your life where you are ready to let go of what does not serve you anymore? It’s time to simplify and clean up our lives and our homes. You don’t need to drag along with you anymore, all that baggage and possessions that tie you down.

It’s time to let go of the material things that don’t bring you joy and happiness. Give yourself permission to start cleaning, donating and letting go of all that stuff.

Breaking Old Patterns

We are seeing a lot of bad behavior in our lives and in the world lately. Some days, it seems as if the world was populated only by toddlers. People around us are having meltdowns, anger issues and trouble dealing with their emotional issues.

Lots of people come through the door of my shop and since we are a creativity and wellness shop, people know it is okay to share their issues with us. Recently, a lady came in and somehow the talk came around to her having issues with her sisters and about them giving her unwanted advice that ended up in upset and fighting. As she described her issues with her sisters, I realized that all this trouble reached into the past from childhood. It was sibling rivalry that started long ago and was brought forward as a pattern that they have repeated for years. She wanted to know what to do.

I mentioned that I have had the same issue in my life. I finally realized if I just thanked the person for the advice, the conversation was over. I didn’t have to say yes or no to their advice, just thanked them for their input. She said “how do I do that?” and my advice was all you have to do when it happens next time is say “thank you for the advice.”

We need to let go of old patterns, family patterns, old beliefs, old reactions we have from our childhood and have carried into our adult lives. When you come in conflict with someone, just stop yourself from getting upset by taking a deep breath and don’t take it personally. Make yourself handle it in a different way so you can break the old pattern. It’s easy but you have to catch yourself and not go into old reactions.

Keep your words and thoughts positive, stop complaining, change your self-talk and just be aware that if things aren’t flowing in your life, that you are stuck in old behaviors and patterns and that you can simply change your thoughts and change your life.
